KINGMAN - On August 23, Arizona Department of Safety and Health (ADOSH) conducted an intensive safety audit of the Nucor Steel Kingman mill.

Before they left the grounds, Nucor Steel Kingman was informed that they had passed the audit, and were being awarded the VPP Star Certification.

This certification is not easily achieved. The Kingman facility is one of 46 facilities in the state to hold this certification. There are approximately 2,360 businesses in the United States as a whole that hold this certification. Nucor Steel Kingman is now part of a very elite group.

On Friday, October 19, the plant held a celebration of the certification award at the mill, Dignitaries who joined us in the celebration included Matt Contorelli, Director of Government and Legislative Affairs for the Arizona Commerce Authority; Brandon Stowell, VPP Manager for ADOSH; Jean Bishop, Mohave County District 4 Supervisor; Janice Duke, Mohave County District 1 Supervisor; as well as Dave Sumoski, EVP for Nucor Steel BMG; Dan Needham, VP and General Manager of Nucor Steel Kingman and Plymouth, Utah; Doug Adams, currently the General Manager at Nucor Steel Connecticut and who was the first Plant Manager at Nucor Steel Kingman when we opened, along with our current Plant Manager, Joey Loosle.

President and CEO, John Ferriola, often states that “Nothing is more important than safety. Absolutely nothing.”

To that end, Nucor Steel Kingman takes the safety of our team, customers and vendors to the extreme. This safety culture extends beyond the borders of the mill. We cultivate this culture at home and in our community.

The Voluntary Protection Program, VPP, was incepted by OSHA and is overseen by Arizona Department of Safety and Health, ADOSH, as a way to recognize companies who achieve and maintain exemplary safety and health standards. These standards are accomplished by establishing programs, policies and procedures that lead Nucor employees to be able to go home daily without incurring any type of incident, including injuries.

Teammates at Nucor Steel Kingman are expected to adhere to these standards, as well as continually find ways to improve our processes which in turn, improves their safety record. To date, they are well over 600 days without a recordable. They have twice exceeded 1,000 days plus without a recordable.

Nucor Steel Kingman, LLC, part of the Nucor Corporation, began operations in Kingman, Arizona in December of 2008 and produced their first coil in April of 2010.
