BULLHEAD CITY – Student government and school district government will intersect Monday night, October 8, when the student councils of Mohave High School in Bullhead City and River Valley High School in Mohave Valley sponsor a forum for Colorado River Union High School District school board candidates.

The forum is open to the public and begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Mohave High auditorium, 2251 Highway 95, at the corner of Hancock Road.

The questions will be moderated by Paul Bull, a local civic volunteer and insurance agent.

All eight candidates have been invited. Five have confirmed their attendance; two have scheduling conflicts and one did not respond.

Audience members may submit written questions prior to the start of the forum. Bull will choose from those questions, as well as those submitted by the student government organizers, to avoid duplicates. There will not be microphones for audience members to ask live questions.

“It is important for us as student government leaders, and for the general public, to know where the candidates stand on major issues facing the school board and CRUHSD,” said MHS student government president Jared Leon and RVHS student government president Amy Cervantes in a joint statement. “With three of the five seats open on next month’s ballot, this is a very important election for our community.”

As of this writing, incumbents Lori Crampton and Laureen Davidson, along with Richard Cardone, Carlos Lopez and Pat Young, have confirmed their attendance. Mishaun Newman and Royann Ortiz have possible scheduling conflicts, and Eva Corbett has not responded.

Arizona Revised Statutes section 15-511 (A.R.S. §15-511) prohibits school districts from using school resources to influence the outcome of an election. The high school auditorium is periodically used for various community events, including candidate forums, and Bull is a neutral individual without school board ties who will moderate the event. None of the candidates or their campaigns were involved in setting up the forum.
